Brothers Scrap Recycling Pty Ltd (ABN 44 694 523 156) is a Victorian scrap metal recycler. We take the privacy of our customers, suppliers and website visitors seriously. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and the rights you have over it.
This policy is written to comply with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the thirteen Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). It also covers the personal information we are required to collect and hold under the Second-Hand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Act 1989 (Vic), which applies to every licensed scrap metal dealer in Victoria.
By selling scrap to us, hiring a bin from us, booking a mobile collection, dropping off an end-of-life vehicle or using this website, you agree to the practices set out in this policy.
This policy applies to:
We only collect what we need to run a safe, legal and traceable scrap business. The information we collect falls into five groups.
For every scrap metal transaction, the Second-Hand Dealers and Pawnbrokers Act 1989 (Vic) requires us to record:
This information is collected at the weighbridge or at the gate before any payment is made. We cannot accept scrap without it.
In addition to the items above, for an end-of-life vehicle we also collect:
We collect personal information directly from you in most cases. The main collection points are:
Sometimes we collect information about you from third parties. For example, from VicRoads or PPSR when verifying vehicle ownership, from your bank when processing an EFT payment, or from Victoria Police where we are responding to a lawful information request about suspicious or stolen goods.
We collect personal information for the following purposes:
Under Victorian law, a licensed second-hand dealer cannot buy scrap metal without recording the seller’s identity. This is a mandatory legal obligation, not a Brothers Scrap Recycling business choice. Records are kept in a tamper-evident transaction register and are available for inspection by Victoria Police at any time.
If you choose not to provide the required ID, we cannot lawfully buy your scrap. There is no work-around.
Records are held in two systems.
Both are kept on the yard premises at 9 Balmoral Avenue, Dandenong, and are only accessible to authorised staff. Digital backups are held in encrypted cloud storage hosted within Australia. CCTV footage is held on a local recorder and is overwritten on a rolling cycle, except where retained for a specific incident.
We require everyone on our team who handles personal information to keep it confidential. They are only allowed to use it for the purpose it was collected.
We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information.
We share personal information only in the following circumstances:
We do not disclose personal information overseas, except where a cloud service provider routes data through an offshore data centre as part of normal global infrastructure. In those cases we use providers with recognised Australian Privacy Principle commitments.
We will only send you marketing emails or messages if you have given us your contact details and either opted in or are an existing customer who would reasonably expect to receive them.
Every marketing email includes a one-click unsubscribe link. You can also unsubscribe by replying with the word UNSUBSCRIBE or by calling +61 420 332 222. We will action your request within five business days.
This complies with the Spam Act 2003 (Cth).
The Brothers Scrap Recycling website uses cookies and similar technologies to make the site work properly and to understand how it is being used. The full details, including what we use, how to switch them off and which third parties are involved, are in our separate Cookies and Tracking Notice.
Under the Australian Privacy Principles, you have the right to:
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details at the bottom of this policy. We will respond to your request within thirty days. There is no charge for a reasonable request.
There are limited cases where we cannot delete or hand over information. The main one is the transaction register we are legally required to keep under Victorian scrap metal laws. We cannot delete that record, even at your request, until the legal retention period has passed.
After these periods, we destroy or de-identify the information.
Our services are not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under sixteen. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will delete it.
We may update this policy from time to time. The current version is always posted on this page with the date of last update at the bottom. Material changes will be flagged on our home page for at least thirty days.
If you have a question about this policy, want to exercise a right, or want to make a complaint:
We aim to resolve every privacy complaint within thirty days. If you are not satisfied with our response, you can take your complaint to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC):
