Cookies and Tracking Notice

What this notice covers

This notice explains the cookies and similar tracking technologies the Brothers Scrap Recycling website uses, why we use them, and how you can control them. Read it together with our Privacy Policy.

What a cookie is

A cookie is a small text file that a website places on your device when you visit. The file lets the site recognise your browser on later visits, store small bits of preference data, and measure how the site is being used. Some cookies are placed by us. Some are placed by third parties whose tools we use (such as Google or Meta).

Similar technologies (pixels, tags, local storage, server logs) work the same way for our purposes and are covered by this notice.

The cookies and tracking we use

We group what we use into four categories.

  1. Strictly necessary. These cookies make the website work. They handle things like security, form submission, and remembering which page you are on. The site will not work properly without them. We do not ask for consent for strictly necessary cookies because they are essential.
  2. Functional. These cookies remember small preferences, for example whether you have already dismissed a banner. They do not identify you and they do not track you across other sites.
  3. Analytics. We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors use the site. GA4 tells us things like which pages are read most, where visitors come from (Google search, social media, direct), what device they are on, and roughly which region of Victoria. GA4 is configured with IP anonymisation and short retention. We use the aggregated reports, not individual user profiles.
  4. Marketing and conversion. Where Brothers Scrap Recycling runs paid advertising, we use Google Tag Manager to load advertising tags, and we may use the Meta Pixel (Facebook and Instagram) and Google Ads conversion tags to measure whether an ad led to a quote request or a booking. These tools may set cookies and process limited personal information about your visit.

We never use cookies to read other files on your device, to access your camera or microphone, or to collect financial information.

Lawful basis

For strictly necessary and basic functional cookies, we rely on legitimate interest. For analytics, marketing and conversion cookies that involve a third party, we rely on your continued use of the site after you have been notified, in line with current Australian practice for online tracking.

If you are visiting from outside Australia, your local rules may require explicit consent. We treat first-time visitors with a cookie banner that gives you the option to accept or to decline non-essential cookies.

How to control or switch off cookies

You can control cookies in several ways.

  • Use the banner on first visit. Decline non-essential cookies if you prefer.
  • Use your browser settings. Every modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari) lets you view, block and delete cookies. Search your browser’s help for “manage cookies”.
  • Switch off Google Analytics. Install Google’s opt-out browser add-on at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
  • Opt out of Meta personalised ads. In your Facebook or Instagram account settings, under Ad preferences.
  • Opt out of third-party advertising broadly. youronlinechoices.com.au lets you opt out of personalised advertising from many networks at once.

Switching off cookies will not stop you from using the site. Some convenience features may not remember your choices between visits.

Server logs

We also keep standard server logs. Each request to the website creates a log entry that may include your IP address, user agent, referrer, time of request and the page you asked for. We use logs to keep the site secure and to investigate problems. Logs are kept for a short period and then deleted or rolled over.

Children

The website is not directed at children under sixteen. If a parent or guardian believes a child has used the site in a way that has triggered tracking, please contact us.

Changes

We may update this notice. The current version, with its effective date, is always on this page.
