Cables and Wire

Scrap cable and wire, paid on copper content

Cable is copper wrapped in plastic, and the plastic is why grading matters. Brothers buys scrap cable and wire in Melbourne at daily-market rates, paid on recoverable copper content and grade. Bring it to the yard or book a free pickup.

Cable grades we buy

Copper grades we buy image

Bright bare copper wire.

No insulation at all. Paid at the clean copper rate.

High-yield cable.

Thick single-core and house wire with a high copper-to-plastic ratio.

Low-yield cable.

Thin data, comms and flex with more plastic than copper.

Armoured and steel-wire cable.

Heavier cable with a steel layer, graded separately.

The thicker the copper and the less the plastic, the higher the rate.

Strip it or sell it whole?

You do not have to strip cable. We grade and pay whole cable on copper content every day. For large volumes of thick single-core, stripping can pay more because bare bright copper is the top rate. We will weigh it both ways with you for a big load so you can choose.

How we grade cable

We assess the copper-to-insulation ratio by type and condition. Mixed cable is graded to the lower component unless it is sorted. Sorting house wire away from thin flex before you come in lifts the average rate. See related copper grades.

Commonly Asked Questions

Do I have to strip cable before I bring it in?
No. We pay whole cable on copper content daily. Stripping thick single-core can pay more, and we will weigh both ways for large loads.
On recoverable copper content and grade. Thick copper with little plastic pays the most. Thin flex pays less.
Yes. It is lower yield because of the plastic-to-copper ratio, but it is bought at the daily low-yield rate.
It depends on grade. Call us for today’s cable numbers. We also quote you before we weigh.
Yes. Book a free pickup, or a bin for ongoing strip-out volume.
